About this test
The word typing test asks you to type a fixed number of common English words instead of racing a clock. Because everyone types the same amount, word mode is a fair way to compare attempts: your time — and therefore your WPM — depends only on how quickly and cleanly you finish. The words are drawn from frequency-based lists, so you practice the vocabulary you actually type every day rather than obscure terms. Choose a short 10-word sprint or a 100-word marathon depending on whether you want a quick check or a sustained effort. There's no time pressure hanging over you, which many people find more relaxed than a countdown, making word mode a friendly place to build a smooth, accurate rhythm.
How to use it
- Pick how many words to type (10, 25, 50, or 100).
- Start typing — the timer begins on your first key and stops when you finish the last word.
- Correct words turn green; mistakes are highlighted.
- Review your WPM, accuracy, and consistency at the end.

How are the words chosen?
From curated frequency-based lists of common English words, with no profanity or sensitive terms. You can add capitals, numbers, or punctuation in settings.
Is word mode timed?
There's no countdown. The timer simply records how long you take to finish the chosen number of words.
How is WPM calculated?
One word is defined as five characters. Gross WPM = characters typed ÷ 5 ÷ minutes; Net WPM uses only correctly typed characters. See our methodology page for details.
